Madolyn Leslie1

ID#363, b. 2 June 1919, d. 5 January 2011
Father: John Leslie
Mother: Ivery Mullins

Birth date: 2 June 1919
Birth place: West Virginia.2,3,4

According to her son, she spelled her name as Madolyn all of her adult life even though her birth record and early census records show different spellings.1

As of 1935, Madolyn lived at Webster County, West Virginia.4

Madolyn presumably married Russell Harris Stewart, son of Charles Keller Stewart and Olivia "Ollie" Harris, about 3 September 1939 in Boyd County, Kentucky. This theory is based on the delayed birth certificate for Russell which includes the following as supporting documentation: "Marriage Register #5300, Boyd County Court, Kentucky" and lists the date the original document was made as 03 September 1939.5

Madolyn and Russell Harris were divorced on 10 June 1985 in Hillsborough County, Florida.6 She died at age 91 on 5 January 2011 at Denton, Denton County, Texas.7

Laura Letha Blake1

ID#378, b. 26 January 1905, d. October 1987
Birth date: 26 January 1905
Birth place: Marshall County, West Virginia.1,2

Commonly known by her middle name, Letha.2 Her name initially presented a challenge, as her maiden name as it appears on the record of her marriage is Letha L. Blake.2 Then I learned that her name appears as Laura L. on her gravestone, which seemed to indicate that her name might have been Laura Letha.3 It wasn't until I found the record of her birth that I decided that Laura Letha must be the correct name. While her first name is not included in the original entry in the birth register, there is a handwritten entry to "see file 196E" regarding the addition of "Laura Letha" to the birth record.1 The final clincher that settles it in my mind is that her name is recorded as Laura Harris in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI.)4

Laura married Donald Edgar Harris, son of Isaac Elmer "Ike" Harris and Mary Ellen Stewart, on 21 August 1926 at Moundsville, West Virginia. H. W. Bankes, a minister in the Church of Christ, certified that he united them in marriage.2

Elmer B. Harris1

ID#379, b. 1 August 1906, d. 1985
Father: Isaac Elmer "Ike" Harris
Mother: Mary Ellen Stewart

Birth date: 1 August 1906. Apparently his parents had not decided on the baby's name at the time of birth, for the birth register only lists the Harris surname. However, his gravestone confirms that this birth entry was Elmer's.
Birth place: Rosby's Rock, Marshall County, West Virginia.2,3

As of 29 March 1929, Elmer lived at R.D. 2, Glen Easton, an address in Marshall County, West Virginia.1

Elmer and Margaret Sarah McNinch obtained a marriage license on 30 March 1929 in Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia. Consent for issuance of the license was given by John McNinch, as Margaret was only 19 years old. Margaret Sarah McNinch1,2

ID#380, b. 27 November 1909, d. 1995
Father: John McNinch.1
Mother: Grace L. Allen.1

Birth date: 27 November 1909.2
Birth place: Wolf Run, Marshall County, West Virginia.2

She was commonly known as Margaret, but conflicting records leave me unsure whether her given name was actually Margaret Sarah or Sarah Margaret. Her name was recorded as Margaret S. on the birth register but as Sarah Margaret on her marriage record for which she was one of the informants.2,1

As of 29 March 1929, Sarah lived at R.D. 2, Glen Easton, an address in Marshall County, West Virginia.2

Margaret and Elmer B. Harris obtained a marriage license on 30 March 1929 in Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia. Consent for issuance of the license was given by John McNinch, as Margaret was only 19 years old. The authorization to marry was signed the same day by Maude Riggs, Clerk of the County Court.2 The couple's marriage took place on 30 March 1929 at Cameron, Marshall County, West Virginia. Gordon L. Withers, Paster of the First Baptist Church, certified that he united them in marriage. As previously noted, the marriage record shows the bride's name as Sarah Margaret vs. Margaret Sarah.2

Margaret died in 1995.3 Interred in the Fork Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Fork Ridge Road, Cameron, Marshall County, West Virginia, her name appears as "Margaret Harris" on the gravestone shared with her husband. An additional inscription reads, "Married Mar 30, 1929."3

Eula's first marriage was to Thomas Martin "Tom" Allen, son of Earl Allen and Sadie L. McNinch, on 20 October 1934 at Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia. O. J. Howearth, Pastor of the Christian Church, certified that he united them in marriage.1

The marriage obviously ended in divorce before 1952, the year Eula married her second husband; Tom also married again several years later.

On 1 February 1952 in Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia, Eula applied for a marriage license with Ingram Allen, son of Martin Allen and Alma Mellon. The authorization to marry was signed 04 February 1952 by J. Randall Crow, Clerk of the County Court.3 At that time, she was living at Clouston, West Virginia.3 The couple's marriage took place on 9 February 1952 at Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia. Father: Earl Allen
Mother: Sadie L. McNinch

Birth date: 13 September 1915
Birth place: Cameron, Marshall County, West Virginia.1

As of 19 October 1934, Thomas lived at Glen Easton, Marshall County, West Virginia.2

Thomas' first marriage was to Eula M. Harris, daughter of Isaac Elmer "Ike" Harris and Mary Ellen Stewart, on 20 October 1934 at Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia. O. J. Howearth, Pastor of the Christian Church, certified that he united them in marriage.2

The marriage obviously ended in divorce before 1952, the year Eula married her second husband; Tom also married again several years later.

On 1 May 1953 in Marshall County, West Virginia, Thomas applied for a marriage license with Delta Mae Magers. The authorization to marry was signed 07 May 1953 by J. Randall Crow, Clerk of the County Court.3 However, the couple's marriage didn't take place until 26 May 1968. Although the marriage record does not contain a minister's return confirming an actual marriage, the couple's joint gravestone is inscribed with this marriage date 15 years later. Perhaps the time lapse accounts for the missing return.4

At age 78, Thomas died on 9 August 1994.4 Thomas' body was interred in the Fork Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Fork Ridge Road, Cameron, Marshall County, West Virginia; his name appears on the gravestone as "Thomas M. Allen." The inscription reads, "Our Father Which Art in Heaven" on Tom's side of the stone, and "Married July 26, 1968" on Delta's side, with "Together Forever" at the bottom center.4

Lawrence Jay Harris1

ID#389, b. 3 October 1916, d. 9 July 1990
Father: James Alfred "Jim" Harris
Mother: Bessie Jane Pierce

Birth date: 3 October 1916
Birth place: Marshall County, West Virginia.2

Only 14 days after Lawrence's birth, his mother died. He was raised by his aunt, Bess (Harris) Stewart.3

Glen Harris told me that he once asked Lawrence about his middle name as he had only known him to use the initial "J". When asked what his middle was, Lawrence replied "Jay," but Glen thought he was simply saying the initial "J." Glen asked him again, "But what is your middle name" and Lawrence once again responded "Jay." After a few rounds back and forth, Lawrence finally spelled it out, "J-a-y." The exchange is reminiscent of the old "who's on first" vaudeville routine by Abbott and Costello!4

Lawrence married Viletta May "Vi" Marshall, daughter of Spencer Lee Marshall and Alice C. Miner, on 21 September 1938 at Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia. Vernon C. Cutright, a minister of the M. E. Church, certified that he united them in marriage. Vi's middle name was spelled with an "e" rather than a "y" on her marriage record, i.e. Mae vs. May.2 Lawrence was working as a smelter at the time of their first child's birth.

Lawrence and Viletta lived in Bellaire, Belmont County, Ohio.5,6

At age 73, Lawrence died on 9 July 1990 at Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire, Belmont County, Ohio.5

A memorial service for Lawrence was conducted on 11 July 1990 at Kirby-Vance Funeral Home, 118 Grant Avenue, Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia.7 He was interred on 11 July 1990 in the Halcyon Hills Memorial Park, Rt. 88, Sherrard, Ohio County, West Virginia.7
