Joseph married Mary Alice Cole on 29 November 1911 in Blackford County, Indiana.4

On 6 April 1917, the United States declared war on Germany and officially entered World War I. Every male living within the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 45 was required to register for the draft during one of three separate registration periods. The third registration was held on 12 September 1918 for men aged 18 to 21 and 31 to 45. At age 35, Joseph registered in Hartford City, Blackford County, Indiana, and was described as follows: tall, slender build, brown eyes, black hair.5

The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. All men ages 18 to 64 and not already in the military were required to register for the draft during one of six registration periods. At age 59, Joseph registered on 27 April 1942 at Ladysmith, Rusk County, Wisconsin, and was described as follows: 5' 10", 160 lbs., brown eyes and hair, light complexion.6

James's first marriage was to Charlotte E. Matthew on 10 September 1885 in Taylor County, West Virginia.1

He became a widower at age 34 when Charlotte died on 20 September 1892.4

His second marriage was to Mary Virginia Austin on 11 October 1900 in Preston County, West Virginia. P. T. Flythe certified that he united them in marriage at his residence.3 Mary was living in Preston County at the time; James was residing in neighboring Taylor County.3

At age 76, James died from bronchopneumonia on 11 March 1935 at Grafton, Taylor County, West Virginia.2 He was interred on 13 March 1935 in the Pride Cemetery, Marion County, West Virginia.2
